Camp Rock is an American movie directed by Matthew Diamond. It was released on June 20, 2008 in the United States on Disney Channel. The movie tells a story about a girl who dreams to become a professional singer someday.
The next section of this review is the plot summary of the movie. If you don’t to get spoiled, you may refrain yourself from reading this movie review.
Mitchie Torres (played by Demi Lovato) really wants to go to a summer camp called “Camp Rock”. However, Mitchie’s mother, Connie Torres (played by Maria Canals Barrera), can’t afford for the expenses. Then, Connie thinks of a way so that her daughter can join the camp. She gets a job as a cook for the camp, allowing Mithcie to join the camp. Of course, it wasn’t for free. In return, Mitchie has to help her mother in doing her job.
At the Camp Rock, Mitchie meets many people that have notable family background. Her room-mate, Tess Tyler (played by Meagan Jette Martin), is a popular girl whose mother is famous. Tess has a group consisted of herself, Ella and Peggy. Mitchie is kind of embarrassed because she is the only one who comes to Camp Rock because of her mother’s job as a cook. She tries to hide her real family background by saying that her mother works as a president of Hot Tunes TV China. Tess is impressed of her mother’s job. Because of that, she invites Mithie to join her group. In their room, Mitchie shows Tess, Ella and Peggy the lyrics that she writes by herself. She sings it, but it is still not finished. Ella and Peggy praises her after she sings it. Later, knowing that Mitchie has joined Tess’ group, Caitlyn Geller (played by Alyson Stonder) warns her that being in Tess group isn’t something that she expects it will be.
During the opening jam, Mitchie meets Shane Gray (played by Joe Jonas), an arrogant lead singer of Connect 3, a famous trio band. He is assigned by his uncle, Brown Cesario (played by Daniel Fathers), to be in charge of the dance class together with his band mates Jason (played by Kevin Jonas) and Nate (played by Nick Jonas). The winner of the Final Jam will record a song together with Shane.
Later, Shane overhears someone singing in a room. He falls in love with the voice instantly, but he doesn’t know whose voice it is. When he tries to see who is singing, the singer has gone, leaving Shane feeling clueless about her identity.
Back to Mitchie, still trying to hide her identity She doesn’t come to the kitchen to help her mother. But later, Caitlyn finds out her real identity because she was forced to help in the kitchen as a punishment from Brown. She makes a mess when she get in a fight with Tess by throwing spaghetti at each other in the cafetaria. That’s why she ends up helping in the kitchen and discovers Mitchie’s true face. Caitlyn is shocked at first, but she finally accepts Mitchie the way she is.
Meanwhile, Shane is trying to find the mysterious girl with the captivating voice. When Shane and Mitchie are often seen together, Tess feels jealous. After Mitchie’s real identity is discovered by Tess, she tells everyone about the secret. Because of that, Shane feels upset towards Mitchie. Because of her secret leaking out, Mitchie is kicked out of Tess’ group. However, she is not alone. Mitchie still has Caitlyn by her side. They decide to perform on the Final Jam together.
Before the Final Jam, Tess is preparing foor her performance, Ella and Peggy feels annoyed because they think that Tess always take the most performance from all of them. They never have an agreement about the performance. Then, Ella and Peggy decides to separate themselves from Tess, going on their own separate performance and leaving Tess alone.
Tess remembers that Mitchie has an incomplete song that she writes by herself. Tess tries to search through Mitchie’s belonging to find a book that has Mitchie’s lyrics in it. She takes it away with her and then leaves the room, hoping that she won’t be able to use that song in the Final Jam.
At the night before the Final Jam, Tess tries to frame Mitchie and Caitlyn for stealing her bracelet. Tess reports this incident to the camp owner, Brown. Because of this, Mitchie and Caitlyn can’t participate in the Final Jam because Brown prohibits them.
Finally, the Final Jam comes. Tess performs as a solo singer. However, she stumbles when her mother averts her attention to pick up a call during her performance. Peggy also performs by herself, using her real name Margaret Dupree. She sings “Here I am”, while playing guitar. When Brown is going to announce the last song, Mitchie comes up to the stage. She sings “This is Me”, a song that tells about someone who finally realizes where she belongs after hiding herself.
Upon hearing Mitchie sings, Shane realizes that she is the owner of the voice that he has been searching. At a part of the song, he joins in, singing together with Mitchie. After the performance, it is decided that the winner of the Final Jam is Peggy. Mitchie and Caitlyn is happy enough that they can perform in the Final Jam. Later, Mitchie and Shane reunite and promised to meet again on the next summer.
In my opinion, Camp Rock is a really good movie. What I like the most is the plot that shows a girl who wants to show her dreams that she has inside her. At first, she tries to hide her real self, but after going through hardships, she finally can accept who she really is and tell the world that she’s ready to shine. Moreover, the musics are great, and the some of the songs have meaningful lyrics. Personally, I like Here I am and This is Me. The lyrics are so touching that I can relate to them.
What I can get from watching this movie is that nobody needs to hide their true self. You are who you are. Social status may be important for some people. However, those who really truly care about you will accept you just the way you are. In addition, lying is not a good option to get friends hanging around you. You may lie to them and getting yourself a friendship full of lies. On the other hand, you may choose to stay honest and find the people who are qualified to be your true friends.
All in all, Camp Rock is truly a good family movie. I recommend this movie to those who like watching movie that has some good music in it. I hope that anyone who read my review will find it helpful and will be interested to watch the movie.
